MAG RUFFMAN For QMI Agency If you're Canadian, you should e able to answer this question corectly: When it's minus 17 outside, ill bright sunlight melt surface now off the driveway? If you answered 'No', check your itizenship. Even Canadians who live on the undra know that sunlight has an ncanny ability to melt ice and now when the air temperature s far below the freezing point of ater. So how does sunlight convince ce to turn into water, even when it's ellaciously cold outside? Could it be that sunlight contains secret ingredient called 'infraed wavelengths'? Oh yes, it could. our Canadian-ness just went up a otch. All You Can Heat Have you ever sat outside after nowshoeing or skiing and enjoyed he sun's heat on your face, easily magining yourself at a Mexican esort? Even though the recorded emperature was colder than a well igger's belt buckle? Well, THAT is he magic of infrared. Infrared wavelengths heat people nd objects. Th ey don't heat air. Why is this important? Because hen you're not trying to heat the ir, it's a lot cheaper. Traditional convection heaters forced air furnaces, for example) arm the air in your house in order o transfer the heat energy to you, he human homeowner. Infrared lamps take a more direct pproach. They instantly heat you nd the objects around you. Th ey on't suck the humidity out of the ir. They don't circulate dust or llergens or viruses. Th ey don't hum loudly while spewing hot air; in fact, they make no sound at all. Th ey just deliver a continuous tropical heat wave of glorious warmth. Even a strong wind can't dissuade infrared wavelengths, which is why taverns often employ infrared technology to heat their outdoor patios. Oh, I cannot say enough friendly things about infrared. This cheap, soothing heating technology is more efficient than other forms of heating, and operates silently, cleanly and effectively for a maximum of 15 cents an hour (depend- Honesty, Trust &Effective Results 613.732.3601 Les Scott Sales Representative Cell: 613.639.4645 ing on fi xture, based on 10 cents per kilowatt hour). If you need to heat a workshop, garage, patio, mudroom or porch, infrared is the toasty treat that can't be beat. Infrared heaters are available in lots of different styles. I've only tested a few and here are my happy fi ndings. My first infrared lamp comes from a Canadian eBay seller called Saunacore. Saunacore builds infrared saunas and sells a range of infrared fi xtures. I ordered their 1500-watt model and man, does it kick out the heat. It

It throws an instant blanket of rosy warmth over my 12x25 foot workshop, even when it's -28 outside. And because it heats me immediately, I can turn it on and start working right away, whereas when I was using (expensive) baseboard heat, I'd have to let the air in the workshop warm up for an hour before I found it tolerable, and the tools and surfaces were still unpleasantly cold. MLS 824006 lamp, a friend mentioned a sale on infrared ceiling-mounted fixtures at Princess Auto, and I got two more small infrared units for under $50 each. The heat they produce (roughly 5,000 BTUs/hour) is not nearly as strong as the Saunacore model, but they add a soft, instant blanket of heat to our garage. Th ey have a sixfoot power cord and a couple of settings so you can moderate the level of heat. If you need heat in refi ned areas of your house rather than in a workshop or garage, you can also find small, attractive infrared space heaters. I got a little Saunacore model, $200, also on eBay. It's compact at about 16 inches square and has real wood housing (available in three colours), a thermostat, remote and timer. It's a fantastic addition to our drafty old house, especially the master bedroom with its appalling habit of dropping to seven or eight degrees on winter nights. I mean, I like snuggling as much as the next girl, but my nose was always colder than a witch's pectorals until my infrared heater arrived. Details: Th e 1500-watt Saunacore lamp (with stand) costs about $300 and shipping was free; the lamp is also available without the stand and comes in a range of sizes from 300 watts to 2500 watts. Visit www. saunacore.com for more info or search "infrared shop heater" on eBay.ca. The smaller infrared ceilingmounted model is available at Lee Valley Tools and Princess Auto for around $60. - Mag Ruff man appears regularly on radio and TV. Visit her online at www.toolgirl.com.
