Saluting the best of the best I t started as part of the Calgary Region Home Builders Association?s 38th Annual President?s Ball as the Sales and Marketing Awards 22 years ago. Fifteen awards recognizing the marketing and merchandising achievements of members of the home building industry were handed out in front of a crowd of about 100 people at Calgary?s Glencoe Club. Things have changed since 1986: Last year?s event attracted more than 1,800 people to the Telus Convention Centre, 61 awards will be handed out this year, the Calgary Region Home Builders Association is now the Canadian Home Builders Association-Calgary Region and the Sales and Marketing Awards have been shortened to the SAM Awards. But the gala remains one of the biggest highlights of the year for the home building industry. Doug Whitney has been involved with the SAMs for more than 10 years and for the last six, has served as the SAM Awards Committee chairman and says the importance and credibility of the awards have ...

communities T o the untrained eye, it may look like a barren tract of prairie land, but to someone schooled in community design and planning, it is a blank canvas awaiting a vision and it?s where winning a SAM Award begins. Paul Taylor, executive vice-president at Hopewell Residential Communities, says the original vision is multi-layered. ?One of the major things is we have to understand who the community is going to speak to, everything from the target market right through to all the amenities,? says Taylor. ?These days there is a tremendous amount of amenities planned and the amenity package has a major impact on the flavour and style of the community.? Community design and development is much different that even two decades ago, when the first SAMs where handed out. ?Nature has a huge effect on the final design,? says Taylor. ?I?ve been in the business for 20 years and in the beginning, we placed a lot of emphasis on views and being next to a creek or something like that. ?Quite fr ...

custom homes T hey can take anywhere from six months to two years, can be priced in the $400,000 range, or can exceed $1 million ? custom homes truly are customized to each and every purchaser ? their budget, their lifestyle, their needs. ?A custom home just means the home is personalized to its owner, regardless of the size of the home or the lot,? says Ryan Hall, vice-president, marketing of SAM Award nominated Baywest Homes. ?You end up with a home that fits your lifestyle needs from the layout of the floorplan, through the finishing details ? everything has your signature on it, and it?s really a freedom of choice.? And with that freedom comes new ideas and one-of-akind looks, Hall says. From home offices to media rooms, wine cellars to outdoor kitchens, there?s a way to incorporate every dream, big or small. ?Floorplan flexibility and design is the largest component that most people look at when choosing to design a custom home,? he says. ?The amount of rooms, the size of them, th ...

show homes homes T hink of all the new ideas, innovative concepts and never-before-seen products available in new homes today. A showhome is the perfect place to showcase everything the new home building industry has to offer. ?Seeing a showhome in person benefits potential buyers by providing a tangible experience ? you can touch and see, and it allows people to experience the quality, designs and features offered by the builder,? says Val Douglas of SAM Award nominated Albi Homes. ?The showhome is a starting point for consumers ? look beyond the interior design. Instead, base your judgment on the floor plan and how it fits your lifestyle. Know the features of the home and the value they would bring to your life.? But value means different things to different people ? some home buyers need a main floor office for parents and a second-storey bonus room for the kids. Some buyers need only two bedrooms, while some need four. And that?s why home builders don?t just offer one showhome. The ...
