But when envisioning the restored splendour of an aged fixer upper, a reality check is a good idea on the potential costs. Gutting a room in century houses is not the same as newer houses. The older houses usually were built with lathe and plaster on the interior walls and ceilings. Lathe is strips of wood that are nailed to the wall studs. Plaster is spread evenly over them to form the flat surface. It was a time-consuming method of construction requiring skilled tradesmen. Undisturbed, lathe and plaster can last indefinitely. It is a sound barrier second to none. But cracks in the plaster can mean it's time to take it off rather than patch it.
