Consul Grzegorz Jopkiewicz presided over the ceremony which took place at the Consulate General of the Republic Poland in Toronto. The Order of Polonia Restituta (Rebirth of Poland) was established in 1921 and is Poland's second highest civilian award. Th e award is conferred by the president of Poland for outstanding achievement in various areas including public service activities. Stohandel, who immigrated to Canada in 1952, has spent a lifetime in the service of the Polish Canadian community, most notably with the Polish Scouting Association. Following in the steps of his two older siblings, the six-year-old chose a cause near to his heart and used his birthday party to raise awareness and money. When presenting the cheque to Ecole elementaire et secondaire L'Equinoxe principal Jean-Louis Jean, the senior kindergarten student was bashful. The principal was wowed by the amount that Demirius raised and thanked the young student. On March 17, Demirius celebrated his sixth birthday and in lieu of gifts he asked his friends, family members and neighbours to donated money, which he proceeded to give to the school for its playground fund.
